How much does ButterflyMX cost?
ButterflyMX publishes its video intercom panels at $3,995 to $6,495 each and charges $30 to $42 per apartment unit per year for software. Installation, door hardware, power, and network are extra and depend on the building. For a 24-unit building with one 8-inch panel, the published hardware and first year of software come to about $4,700 to $5,000 before installation. Residents pay nothing.

Hardware prices
ButterflyMX sells two screen sizes in two mounting styles. Surface panels mount on a wall or pedestal. Recessed panels set into the wall or pedestal for a flush look and cost $500 more.

Which size? The 8-inch panel suits most walk-up and mid-size entries. We suggest the 12-inch where the directory is long, at a main lobby, or at a gate where visitors read the screen from a car.
Software prices
ButterflyMX charges an annual software fee per apartment unit, published as $30 to $42 per unit per year. Where you land in that range depends on the features and integrations you add. The fee covers the resident app, new features as ButterflyMX releases them, and live support by phone or email. Commercial and office buildings are priced by employee count instead.
What installation depends on
Installation is where two buildings with the same unit count can land far apart. These are the things we look at on the site walk:
- Number of controlled openings. Front entry, rear door, vestibule, garage, gate, package room, amenity rooms.
- The doors themselves. Whether each door already has an electric strike or maglock that works, the condition of the frame and closer, and what exit hardware the door needs.
- Fire alarm and egress. Doors that must release on alarm need coordination with your fire alarm vendor.
- Power and network. How far we have to go to reach power and a reliable internet connection at each panel.
- Mounting. Surface, recessed, pedestal, or gooseneck for a driveway gate.
- Add-ons. Elevator control, vehicle access, package room, security cameras, and unit smart locks.
Who pays for what
The owner or association pays for hardware, software, and installation. Residents and visitors pay nothing and download the app for free. In condo buildings the association often treats the hardware and installation as a capital expense and the software as an operating line in the budget.
Ways to spread the cost
Start with the front entry and the door residents use most, then add the rear door, garage, or gate in a later budget year. In new buildings, open with the entries and cameras live and add unit smart locks as a second phase.
ButterflyMX compared with a traditional intercom
A traditional audio or video intercom puts a station in every unit and a wire to each one. ButterflyMX moves that cost out of the walls and into an annual software fee. In a vintage building with plaster walls, skipping the unit wiring is often what makes the project reasonable.

For a six-unit building, software runs about $180 to $252 a year, so the panel and installation are most of the cost. It’s worth it when you want video, remote access, and an entry log. If the building only needs a keypad on one door, a simpler lock can cost less, and we’ll say so.
How much does a ButterflyMX gate or garage entry cost?
Gates and garage doors add a panel or reader at that opening plus the gate operator connection, and sometimes a pedestal or gooseneck mount. We price those per opening after we see the site.
